A midnight blue bearded iris in the glow of a big full moon, surrounded by a universe of stars. Another in my Iris Goddess Collection, a mixed medium artwork created with alcohol inks and digital painting. Special thanks to Denise Walker for the use of her iris photo as reference.

Your purples here are deep and chasm-like. This is one of your flower paintings where your flowers are bodying-forth deep inner states---ie, making inner states 'flesh'. Some ancient writers on chakras said that the parts of the body associated with chakras are merely the flesh-counterpart of the very inner powers of the cosmos. So, chakras 'body-forth' deep cosmic states which, themselves, have no body. Flowers like this one feel, to me, like those bodying-forths. The blues are dark and deep as well---on the lower half. And you have a progression from a dark passionate lower half to an ethereal all-light upper world---something you've done in other works as well. And, in the center? The confluence of 'center-stuff': the metropolitan center, the downtown area, the place where all the life-giving entities meet: The stamens, the yellows and reds and some very deep blues and some whites: It's like a big mess of primal things, just piled into each other, a messy throbbing gathering. It's a very intuitive choice. And the upper petals---upper half---are as much light blue flame as they are petals. (One of the lower petals has flame-like tentacles too---the big folded-over petal on the right side: In fact, you've given it a bengal tiger pattern! I suppose when you've been painting animals for so long, their patterns will naturally seep into other paintings as well. A kind of nature-based communion.)
I see the alcohol effect---it's impossible to not see it: that great bubbling effect, all those little blurbs and bubbles, esp on the lower left (and in the upper right). I don't know how alcohol inks do this---whether its a repulsion of one liquid from another, or something they do when mixed with water, or with paper...but I know you're doing something to it too, because I've seen other alcohol ink work and it hasn't looked exactly like this. You have these primal bubblings, as if your pieces were right over a spring, and those spring waters just bubble into your painting. This painting would be very powerful without it, but with it---I don't know: It just adds another dimension to it, another primal source added to the ones you already have here.
And the white 'cloud' area---top left---is a break in all the chasmic activity: The skies 'part' for this flower. The iris is the perfect flower for this image---orchids would work perfectly too: any flower with pronounced, primal petals, and those amazing primal centers...While it's a small work---size wise---it's very big in inner power. And that center feels like a gathering of all the primal parts that didn't fit anywhere else, in the flower: It's pulsing, erratic and ecstatic. Terrific piece, Carol. I don't know how you finish these and are able stand up afterwards. I'd have to shut off my phone and not talk to anyone for several days...
