Description

These flamingos were looking fairly miserable - their heads turned into the wind. I have captured them in Walvis Bay, Namibia, in March 2009. Truthfully, I was shocked to see so few of them as I have seen this lagoon covered in flamingos years ago. I was told that the are migratory, so hopefully it was just the wrong season for them! I still do not have my Photoshop re-installed so I have to rely on previously worked images! Thank you for popping in and for your comments and favs om my Upside Down image! Stay well! Hugs Carin xx

Wonderful reflected light in this lovely image.. As you say usual for thousands of flamingo to be in Walvis bay and now the area is protected since 1995.. But Jackals and Kelp Gulls tends to limit ground nesting birds, so the area is seasonal or a drought area used by the birds.. Pretty smart of them eh!

Comparable to penguins who turn their bodies under similar circumstances. But I can't recall if it's the front or back that faces the frigid winds in Antarctica. Logic would indicate the back. Lots of stark contrast and an interesting tiered array of lighting and textural effects in this fine foto, Carin!

This is gorgeous, completely unexpected look at these favorite birds of mine. How I'd love to see the full migration fotos of them--hundreds of those pink feathered beauties all together!!

I can't imagine seeing even one of these in the wild, much less a lagoon covered with them! Great shot, you can almost SEE the wind!

High-rise birds! Awkward on the ground but so graceful in the air. I remember seeing thousands of flamingos at Lake Nakuru, Kenya one December a long time ago. Maybe these are just early birds from there. Another possibility is the development happening at Kamfers Dam. http://www.birdlife.org/news/news/2008/07/kamfers_dam.html I sure hope it's the former.
