Description

This is the inside of a local home in Ollantaytamba in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The current inhabitants of the Valley are the Quechua, descendants of the Inca. They practice agriculture, animal husbandry, and are producing wares and textiles from the wool of their animals. When the Inca Empire expended it conquered different Andean cultures. All of these cultures had their own set of religious beliefs, practices and major deities. However, rather than switching to the Inca State Religion after they were conquered, most of the Andean Peoples simply added the Inca gods to their own set of gods and spirits. This home is a typical example of the many beliefs and religious practices that exist in the region. These beliefs include worshiping the sun, the ancient Inca gods, and animal such as the jaguar, the llama, the snake, and the condor, all of them have a significant role in these beliefs. This home of an elderly couple, their children have left home, represents all the different beliefs. The three animals, which reminded me of the Brother Grimm's fairy tale 'Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten', are the mummified bodies of some of the sacred animals, there was also a head and the claws of a Condor, who plays a big role in their myth. The three sculls are the remnants of ancestors. All four walls were decorated with remnants that represent the various cultural beliefs, but it also included a photo of the couple when they were young. The couple slept on an elevated part of the one-room house, accessible by ladder. The one-room house also included provisions in the form of dried corn, hung from the ceiling, and of course a dozen or so cuy, guinea pigs. The guinea pigs are their 'meat on the hoof' so to speak. They are indigenous to the Andes, and they are believed to have been domesticated as early as 7,000 years ago. They are prodigious breeders, their meat is high in protein, and they are easy to keep. They are kept inside the home. This visit to this house gave us a better insight into Inca and current culture than all the ruins we visited. This picture was taken on 26 August 2014, Sig...

I do hope these people are paid to allow folk to peer into their homes! Fascinating!

@durleybeachbum: Andrea, I assume that some sort of compensation has been arranged by the tour operator to allow tourists into their home. Behind the house was a yard, where home-made textiles, mainly shawls, and blankets were for sale!

Great photo and expose of the peoples home and religious orientations. Thanks for posting and educating us about such a far off place and its peoples. I'd love to see their blankets and other textiles. Keep up the good work! :-)

A most fascinating and stunning capture which you 've generously commented upon to make each and every element of it understandable for us. Thank you so much for sharing, Sig ! ( thank you for visiting my gallery and leaving a nice comment in it, to which I've replied, if you ever have time to go back to it, before heading for Oberammergau). happy_Blue_weihnachten.gif

different strokes for different folks really applies here. if they were to see a typical American home, they would more than likely think we were the ones that are weird
