Description

Bhutan's isolation requires their people to make almost everything they use and grow most of what they eat. As a result they have a fairly large artisan class. Some visitors to this series have had questions concerning what they have seen. I will answer these questions with a short series on the art of Bhutan. We will start with paper making. In the collection below, top left shows wood shavings soaking in water to soften them. Top right shows the machine that turns the shavings into mulch which can be seen at lower left. Puts me in mind of oat meal or porridge. At lower right you can see a worker laying out finished sheets for drying after being removed from a metal press. Bhutan has an active training program for artists that is supported by the government. The center image is a dragon scroll painted by a student on handmade paper. You won't see much unless you zoom.

The art of paper-making - the old fashioned way, how good is that? and then the actual painting on the organic material what brilliant piece of work all around! ... glad you showed us the construction sequence and the final result. BB

Papermaking will always fascinate me and I love seeing the Bhutanese way of doing it and of seeing the masterful work of a student. I figure if a student can do a dragon that well, I shudder to think how good the masters are! I love this glimpse into other lives in another place and the clarity of each shot is delicious. I love these glimpses into life over there...it makes me wanna go.
