Another in my series of new vultures. The Hooded Vulture proved a challenge to create, thanks to it's afro-like hooded hair on my generic Vulture model. A combination of bump and displacement maps help to achieve the proper look.
The Hooded Vulture is found widespread in sub-Saharan Africa; from Senegal and southern Mauritania east through southern Niger and Chad, to southern Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia and western Somalia, southwards to northern Namibia and Botswana, and through Zimbabwe to southern Mozambique and north-eastern South Africa.
It is a smaller vulture measuring 62-72 cm in length and is endangered due to include non-target poisoning, capture for traditional medicine and bushmeat, and direct persecution. . Hooded Vulture meat is reportedly sold as chicken in some places. It's population has dropped by 50% in the past few decades.
While it eats, as all vulture do, carrion, this vulture also eats insects.
If these birds are disturbed when at their nest, they utter a squealing cry of "MAMA MAMA".
