I often respond very positively to art when it is firstly skillful but secondly when there is an element of contrast. In this, the imagined softness of the skin, well projected by the hints of moisture, is heavily counterpointed by the apparent blistering and scailing of the hide at the extremities. Considering the repulsive nature of the succubi and incubi in mythology, this piece works to twist our sympathies towards the creature, feeling empathy and sorrow rather than repulsion. And that, my friends, is what makes great art; when we are compelled into feelings that we did not seek at the initial moment of gazing.
