Description
I see you there, growing fainter
In the shadows of my memory
Your voice no longer clear
Just a whisper in my heart
The smell of you has faded
From your clothes
And I can’t pretend
That I can feel your hands, on my back
Holding me up
Offering support and love
When I feel the most in need
My eyes fill up with tears, when I think of all these years
We’ve missed
Yet I remember you
Sitting in your rocking chair
With something being crocheted
A glass or can of Pepsi by your hand
You were strong and silent
A small smile on your lips
Holding secrets no one ever knew
A long-held dream, of another life
You once spoke to me about
Visions thwarted, so you etched yourself
Another path
Of a husband and a family
You were the solid center, in a world of disarray
And then you passed away
Almost every day, I have a moment that I share with you
A fleeting thought, a joyous laugh,
Thanks to the antics of my son
I remember that you love me and I like to feel I make you proud
Of the woman, who was the girl, whom you brought into your home
You never got to be an artist but you left your mark on all of us
A moving canvas, of flesh and blood, of heart and bone and soul
You sculpted us with values, your kiln fired up with love and discipline
Even when we chose our separate paths, and sometimes found you couldn’t understand
You held us in your heart
Mom, you didn’t always know
Where we were coming from, or going to
You worried how our lives would all end up
But I feel you would be more than pleased to know
Our lives will show
That your legacy of love has carried on
We remember what you taught us
Lessons filling up our heads and hearts
Things that shall endure, across the great divide
Of life and death, and of the unknown
Beyond the senses that we have
P.S. And please, give our love to Dad…
