Well... it's just a guess, but I'd be very surprised if you could get something like the structure you draw from a simple equation... There is a possibility to use the third dimension to parametrize the start value of Z. There are formulas like this in mmf.ufm for Ultrafractal. But you won't get anything like you draw... So unfortunately the (very nice, btw) intuitive generalisation you imagine is not the mathematical one. But maybe there is a trick I didn't see...
