The Integrated Manned Interplanetary Spacecraft was a design from Boeing for a modular manned nuclear spacecraft, where the units could be combined in different ways for manned missions to Mars and Venus.
Research into the NERVA nuclear engines was fairly advanced.
This illustration shows the IMIS assembled craft arriving in the viscinity of Mars. For accuracy, a couple of the modules should have been dropped by this stage, but I really like the look of the whole thing.
Viewers of a certain age near mine might remember seeing this design on Brooke Bond tea cards!
