Description

HMS Surprise is a modern tall ship built at Lunenberg, Nova Scotia in 1970. It is moored on the pier in downtown San Diego, CA and is part of the Museum of Naval History. The design is based on the original 18th century Admirality drawings. She is a replica of a sixth-rate (have no clue what that means) frigate built in 1757. HMS Surprise operated as a sail training vessel in the 1980s and 1990s. This picture was taken on 16 April 2009. Thank you for viewing and commenting and any favs, Sig...

The ship you photographed here was originally named "Rose" before being used in filming the movie "Master And Commander" and renamed HMS Surprise, which kind of stuck to her after that. Also, some Age of Sail trivia here. :) Sixth rate designated any ship bearing 20-24 9 lb guns, and with the Fifth Rate ships was classified as a Frigate. The lower the rate, the heavier the gun load. The HMS Victory (Lord Nelson's ship at Trafalgar) is a First Rate (or Ship of the Line), and carried from 104 to 106 guns on three decks. (I say "is" because she is still carried as an in service ship, though perma-docked in Portsmouth, UK.) Beautiful image of a beautiful ship!!!

Ha! well knight776 beat me too the punch! This is a great shot. Nothing like seeing a tall ship in full sail. Wonderful. If only Victory was afloat! Now that WOULD be something. Excellent. Whats behind her? Rob

Great photo. I thought this ship was familiar...have Master and Commander on DVD and consider it among my favorite movies...mostly for all the sailing shots, sound effects, etc. Big ferry right behind Surprise I presume?
