Description

Says the guy gesturing next to the tree on the left. Sorry 'bout that. I just could not resist spoofing this vis-à-vis a current topic. I think William Penn is telling the natives that the new sales tax will be 6% but that it excludes paper products, food, clothing, and other items. To back up his point, and right to make it, he is demonstrating the very big piece of paper with PENNSYLVANIA written on it and the bit of red cloth. Maybe it's a trade? After all the Dutch pulled a similar deal up in Manhattan -- not realizing they were being scammed by purchasing the island from a tribe that had no rights to sell it; Manhattan was hunting ground which belonged to a rival group. An interesting moment in early colonial times. Enjoy; thanks for viewing.

so many things I could add to this commentary but I'll be nice. Great point made

Oh darn! I was looking forward to them. 😀 It's a nice picture but it does tell a one-sided story. All those natives had no idea they were living in Pennsylvania! I recall walking into San Carlos Basilica with a friend and she saw the big painting of the Spaniards landing from a small boat with flags waving, cross forward, and bright fimbriated sky... comment: I bet. Very succinct and accurate. However, the image/narrative was accurate (propaganda) from the side of the Spaniards, so it is a valid image.

Interesting recording of the event. I often wonder who drew up the documents and if they were the result of negotiation with the Indians. Of course, they had to get something in exchange - cloth, metal implements, etc...The painting was then for viewers to see a historical moment with explanatory text on the paper. Nice photo of this painting. Gives an idea of what the artist wants us to remember. :-)

I'm sure some trading took place. I'd just like to know how the natives felt about some guy across the ocean giving this rights to newcomers without consulting the chief first. I suppose the natives got what they wanted. I recall reading a book about the US war against some of the tribes/nations in Ohio around 1790 and learning that the Indians often lived in proper European-style houses complete with dishes, etc. Settled down with a vengeance it seems. I wonder what the "wild west" would have been like had both groups actually got on much better.
