Description

Greetings all. In the attempt to do something different for me, this is an experimentation with camera DOF. I tried to see how a very shallow DOF could be used in the artistic process, So, here is something either artful or simply a very blurry picture of a pretty lady. I kinda liked it or I wouldn't of posted but it's ok to call BS on this one. I like honest critique, so those of you that are more skilled with a camera can maybe tell me what you think of the effect and how to achieve a better look. Here is what I used on the DAZ camera: camera 50 mm focal length focal distance = 98 // result of a math calculation of camera distance to model. F/stop = 15.

The shallow dof brings the face of this beautiful woman into the focus , it is very good for a portrait! Really great image!

I'm there myself at times, and she does look that way. Always a sweet beauty you post my friend.

Quite like it. Sometimes I use a spot camera in Corel Photo Paint instead, which blurs radial from a set point. I find this much easier and I am sure there must be something similar in Photoshop or Gimp, guiding the viewer to focus on a partcular point of the image.

DOF is one of those techniques that no two people seem to agree on. I think you did a great job with this. Since you asked for a little critique, the two bits of advice I can tell you is to make sure the exact center you want in focus is correctly targeted using the "top" view before you render, and crank up your pixel samples above 12 for both x and y. Happy experimenting!

It works for me. The focus is definitely on her face with the slight DOF you added. I wouldn't know how to do DOF if it bit me in the backside. 😃

Having used this technique, I like the softness it lends to the female characters.

I think that DOF is brilliant here--her eyes are in focus and the blur hides any of the "poser giveaways" of transmapped hair or odd V4 geometry, so you just get the image of a gorgeous lady with matching hair and eyes!
