Description

Finally got off my duff (or rather on it, in front of the computer) and created another page in this story. As before, I'm working with Poser 11's Comic Book Preview mode. I create multiple renders with slight changes to the lighting (there are renders for black, gray and extra line details); I then composite them in Manga Studio 5 and do postwork to clean them up and arrange the panels. For this piece, I am using a new font that I bought at Blambot -- Blambot Casual. I like many things about this font, but there are a few things I need to tweak. If anyone will take the time to look in my gallery and compare the two typefaces, I would greatly appreciate it. I love it! You've really been playing the noir style very well. The composition of images on the page is strong and it reads very well. I also love the style elements you achieve in Manga Studio. It really gives it a more organic feel. Excellent!

Thanks, man! I've really been committing to Manga Studio for this project, trying to learn what it can do. That includes using its built-in effects and textures as a jump start for the panel effects, like the shading in the large panel (doorway and ground), and the shading in the third panel. There is a learning curve, and I still have to go back to Photoshop for a few things, but so far I like the results I'm getting.

Outstanding again! You've really hit on a great technique for this and are using it to great effect - I'm looking forward to seeing more.

I checked back at some past pages and have to say that this new font was a good investment and worth switching to. It has more of a hand-drawn feel to it with a natural flow that is lacking in the old one.

Thanks! I'm also looking forward to finding out where this story goes. I'm approaching this story in the "Marvel Style." In other words, I have the basic plot written, and I'm pacing it so I can figure out what goes on each page, but I don't write the dialogue until the art is finished. For example, my first draft of panel three had more words, but I cut some of them to make it fit. Considering I'm a bit wordy with my dialogue, this isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Thanks for commenting on the font. The original font wasn't popular, so I decided to revisit it. Do you have any thoughts on me sticking with Sentence Case (using uppercase and lowercase letters) or going ALL CAPS? I know the latter would be more "traditional," but I'm seeing more modern comics using the mix (comics include Hellcat, Squirrel Girl, Howard the Duck, and Grumpy Cat). Thoughts?

BTW: Here's a sample of the original font we're talking about.

Great tension building scenes and just a hint of Hatta. The panel layout works well and that new font is really funky, I think ALL CAPS is like someone shouting at you all the time and personally I don't like it, but then again, I'm old school. Keep up the good work.

~Cheers~

I smiled when I read, "and just a hint of Hatta." 😀 I'm glad the funky new font is going over well. I'm taking a suggestion I got and am making a few changes to panels 1 and 3. I'll post a new (hopefully final) version shortly.
