Description

This was our destination for the day during our summer trip. This magnificent falls is located near the NE tip of Minnesota barely 5 miles from the Canadian border. The water makes a drop of 120 feet which makes it the highest falls in the state. To give you a better idea of the size of this falls - try to find the 4 tourists on the left side 2/3 of the way up the photo. This was a serious obstacle to the Native Americans who had to create a 9 mile trail from Lake Superior to avoid the falls. Thus, the trail name became the Grand Portage. Lake superior is only one mile east of this park. Great history lesson for me that day. Thank you for the visit!

Stellar colors and textures in this long distance shot. The brightness of the waterfalls really pops it out in contrast to the rest of the image, Jodie.

a complex shot...Because even though it's straight forward in some ways---ie, two "shoulders" of trees & rocks surrounding a grand falls---it's very complex too. There's a lot going on in those "shoulders," and you haven't messed with them to bring out one element or the other---ie, they're just natural, whole & complex. And the area behind the falls is a fine 'cushion'. I also like the dabs of yellow in the trees, little vivid hints of fall. And then the falls...Falls have a way of becoming about one thing: the water. A big 'duh', but not so obvious when one considers all that's going on around the water. This is about that as well as about the water. The gorgeous rock formations are clear and dark, here, sheer yet dramatic; and it's wonderful how clearly you caught them even though they're far off...Then, you actually have 2 falls here; and the basin has an ore-ish tone, which is really dramatic to me. (And another falls & more ore-ish basin...) A complex, rich area, and I can see why native peoples had trouble traversing this majestic & sharp rock, without modern transport. Further, the shadows on the right-side are beautiful, mirroring the dark tones of the cliff...All in all, a complex, 'roaring' shot, with a clarity you often get without any artifice. Also, a reminder of the drama of the Upper Midwest, of its true primal power...I'll stop for now, but I'll be back. Good to comment on images I've seen several times now. Wonderful & thoughtful art as always.

great shot, I live in Utah so these rocks are very similar to where I love so does the trees.
