Description

Following an incident with the old dog around 1AM this morning and discussions with his vet, we've decided it is time to put down the old dog. Davey will pass this afternoon with love and great sadness. He had a rough start in life, being pulled out of an abusive home when he was only about one year old. Fortunately, he bucked the trend f a lot of shelter dogs and caught the eye of Paula and the kids who smothered him with love and kisses. I was later in the game (about 12 years ago now), but he always had a wag for me and immediately expected to be on the sofa right rext to me when I came home--much to Jager's consternation at times. The last few days, he's limped heavily after he slipped on the stairs and went down hard before I could get to him and we've taken turns carrying him outside for air and relief--he weights nothing now, but the spirit is still there. We'll miss the baying and the annoying habit of standing right where we need to go. The nose in the air surveying the world from the deck Davey Crockett, English coonhound, Rescue, Ruler of all he surveyed. Lover of Guinness and 12 YO McCallan. Davey Crockett, 17 years, 3 months, and 13 days he lived WELL. Davey Crockett, Time to "ga-lump" through the weeds with ease for as long as you like, Time to leave the yard to say hello to all who pass (this time with our love and blessing), and time to roam with those who have gone before. Rest well old friend...

Beautiful dog. Sorry he has to go. It's always hard to give up a beloved pet.

18 years worth of companionship is tough to lose. Davey ultimately was Paula's "Old Man"--Davey replaced another dog that she lost 16 years ago. We just finished an excellent wake of Jagermeister ans Guinness (two of his favorites) recounting things about him that made both of us laugh: That deep talk of a Coonhound. The need to ALWAYS be in the way of where we were going. The unadulterated baying when he was in the Jeep with the top down. Still hurts as he was "My Sofa Buddy"--he would annoy the other dogs into leaving the sofa--even my kid, Jager--until he could sit next to me. He would curl up, give me a deep sigh, and be content to stay there until it was time to go to bed. Gonna miss my Sofa Buddy.

So sorry to see a beloved one pass. It's good that you guys gave him such a loving home and that he lived a happy life. This is a wonderful portrait of him, though. There's a great deal of personality showing through and I'm sure he always felt like he looks here regardless of how time wore on.

Beautiful dog, I'm sorry for your lost, but he lived his last years full of love and happiness and that's the way we need to remember them when they are gone, it's what help us to ease the pain.

I miss every dog companion I have had over the years.each one had their own personality.as a kid I grew up with a dog that lived 18 years also. the neighbor across the street had one that lived to 20 and was on a cable lease it's entire life. I do not think anyone ever gave the poor dog a kind word. no wonder he was so unsociable
