Description

"Hold my heart!  Let not the world tear you away." Across the dark centuries Your words echo around me Crashing my spirit against the Jagged shores of time     You are gone It is in the soft places That I remember you Tones of your movement Touching gently The nearness of your breath Caressing my neck The scent of your hair Falling upon my face Sunlight dancing In splashes of color Across your skin Light traces of soft places Shimmering still Across the dark centuries     You are gone       Yet you remain —T. R. Bolan
By now you may have noticed that I will return to certain portraits from time to time .. finishing them in a different manner than the original.  This is a well worn creative path for me. I began working in photography when I was a teenager with access to a darkroom in our basement at home.  Over the many years since then certain photographs have grown into favorites to which I return again and again to see where the creative process may yet lead.  With the advent of digital imaging software the possibilities for variations in photo finishing have grown nearly limitless. A good 3D render is very much like a photograph for me.  Once I have produced the base image I am satisfied with I re-render at very high quality and save several copies of the original in different file formats.  I also keep the original Poser files of favorite works in the event I should ever wish to return and further evolve the base concept. This portrait of Callad's Charlie is way up high among my favorite 3D creations.  There is a great deal of craft and emotion distilled over two years in the development of Charlie as a character which makes her a deep pleasure for me to work with time and again. This variation on her portrait was developed purely for my own enjoyment .. but it occurred to me that a few other friends might enjoy the pleasure of her company as well.   ;-) Hey!...  it's the weekend.  Go make something amazing! With deep warmth, Terry

While the quality of your work has always been superb, for me its always about the eyes. I don't know how you do it but there is always such emotion in the eyes. This portrait is no exception.

The Wyz': "I don't know how you do it but there is always such emotion in the eyes." Have you ever seen the movie 'The House of Wax' ?    ;-) Whatever the medium, if you are working on a portrait, the eyes are always your main subject.  It has to be this way if you want to connect with your audience. What's the first thing we touch .. really touch .. on another person?  No matter how wildly passionate a relationship may become .. the first thing we touch upon one another are the eyes.    Contact! If you are creating a photographic portrait then always .. always .. make the eyes the sharpest point of focus.  A sense of depth of field can be created for a 3D portrait in post but if you want to really reach out and touch your viewers then you need to work on infusing those eyes with a glimmer of true spirit.  This is not some magic gift that I spill across my portraits it's just added attention at the end of my post process. Spirit is light and if we want to bring out the spirit in our characters than it's light that we must paint with.  If a few people make some noise about wanting to refine their skillset in this area then I'll carve out some time to put something together to help with this effort.  ... speak up! Light and warmth.  What a dim, cold universe it would be without them.   I don't add those sentiments at the end of my messages for nuthin'! With warmth, Terry

Your comment here above should be included in all portrait turotials, Terry! It can be frustrating to see so many "dead" portraits and close-ups, juts because so many artists don't pay enough attention to the work with a character's eyes... Love the sensual tone in your poem, it's like the warmest caress kept deep inside in one's memory... Vashek
