Description

The five story pagoda was originally in the Japanese exhibit at the Panama Pacific Exposition of 1915. After the close of the exposition the Hagiwara family had it brought to the Japanese Tea Garden, San Francisco, California, USA. In Japan and other countries in the Far East, pagodas which are Buddhist shrines, were often built over a sacred relic. It is unknown if this tradition was continued here. Great photo. There was one in Kew Gardens when I was young - but you couldn't enter it - probably because of War Damage. It looked good from a distance, though not as elaborate as this one.
