Description

For most of my life I have used wood for heat whenever possible. To a man of my sensibilities doing so provides a powerful, even primal, satisfaction. It also saves me about $1,500 per year on propane, another kind of satisfaction! This old White Oak, situated on top of a hill in a large pasture, was killed by lightning last summer. The ring count shows it to be 120 years old. I have been working on it for nearly a month now, and I’m about half finished. One day, as I was working on it, I took a short break. I was looking at a winter storm blowing in from the north. As I stood there with my foot on a log, axe in hand, sawdust in my grizzled beard, hair blowing in the cold North wind, I realized I was living in a Hemingway story--- “The Old Man and the Tree”!

Well done Charles... I could always guess as to your soul through your expressions of your photography... now I find too, through your words you have a talent for great writing as well! No doubt, as per your family influences on "Krittermom"... you hail from fine family. Thank-you for all you share with us on our world at Renderosity.

It is a picture that shows feeling. When Charles told me he were going to do this, I wondered how he would show the tree. I love this as it does tell the story. I do believe I like the cows in the back ground still supervising his work. I hope he tells the rest of that story here someday. As for Technistrations comment on family influences, our mother is the one that taught us our love and respect of nature, as well as a very strong work ethic. Charles and I both have chosen to follow her teachings.

not only that, but you are rooted in the past with the pioneers and others who did not use or have the luxury of our 'modern' conveniences. if I had my way - it would be wood

A superbly strong composition, and powerful writing. I still have a wood fire, but only in my living room. My lodgers expect and get central heating.
