Description

Photo of city mural painted on brick wall in Leavenworth, Kansas. Estimated dimensions are 15 x 30 feet. It is best viewed as a full-sized image. Scenic mural is painted upon black stucco background and faces west as did all the people of the city in the mid to late 1800s. Photo was taken in late afternoon, hence the tree shadows on lower left and right corners of mural. Earlier in the day the entire mural is in deep shade. Scene shows a Leavenworth street in the 1870s. Outside shape of mural is the shape of the state of Kansas. "First City" designation refers to Leavenworth as the first city incorporated in the Kansas Territory in 1854. This was on the leading edge of the country's western frontier during the 1820s - 1850s. Star in the upper right hand corner depicts the city location on the west bank of the Missouri River. Mural's central figure is famous historic character from here, Buffalo Bill Cody, 1846-1917. He became famous as Pony Express rider, Army scout, buffalo hunter for the Union Pacific Railroad and as a "Wild West show" entrepreneur/promoter. Cody brought his wild west show to Europe and performed for Queen Victoria, among many other heads of state. The show was so popular, the Prince of Wales (future Edward VII) reportedly saw it three times.

The full view is a must on this one for the details. With the smaller preview, I was not so fond of the tree shadows, but at full view, they add to the visual interest and integrate the mural and wall nicely!
