I always wondered why these weird looking R2-D2 things were so dangerous. They have a plunger for a hand, for crying out loud! Unless Dr. Who was overly attached to his clogged toilet, I don't think he had much to fear! Nice looking picture.

Ah, my dear Seaview123, others have underestimated the the usefulness of the "plunger" at the cost of their very lives! Actually, the writer tasked with reintroducing the Daleks in Russel T. Davies' revival of Doctor Who asked his wife what she thought were the shortcomings of the Daleks. Not being a "fan", she could look at them a tad more objectively. One of the things she expressed was the seeming uselessness of a plunger for a manipulator arm. The writer then used this information to make the Dalek far more dangerous. After a "tortured" Dalek had partially re-energized itself, it seized its tormentor with the plunger cup and started to crush his skull. Though looking like rubber to human eyes, the "cup" was apparently composed of some flexible "memory" material that could be reshaped at the control of the mutant creature sealed inside. (The Daleks are not robots, but something more akin to tanks with a slimy "mutants" driving them.) Later, it slammed the plunger into a video monitor and used it both as an energy conduit to restore its power and as a "data port" to start downloading data from the internet. After that, it placed the plunger over an access keypad. It kinda' flattened across the surface and then we saw regions of the "rubber" pucker in and out, suggesting it was rapidly punching the keys with it. A later episode showed several Daleks press their "plungers" against the head of a technician to extract data directly from his brain. The process also shriveled his flesh like that of a mummy! Thanks to writer Rob Shearman, elements of the Daleks which used to be mocked became outright frightening! Sincerely, Bill
