Description

OK - I'm going to try this again.... I tried posting this a couple days ago, and thought it looked like crap with Rendo's limited viewing size, so I took it down. I got a couple sitemails asking what happened to that 'beautiful' panorama LOL! I guess it looks better than I thought... So here it is again at about 700 X 6000 pixels to fit the gallery requirements. This 360-degree panorama was a series of photos taken Sunday evening from about 150 feet with my DJI Mavic Pro. It was a matter of taking a photo, yawing (rotating) the drone slightly, taking another photo, rotating again, and repeating. I used Photoshop CC's photomerge feature to stitch the photos into this panorama. From the left, we are looking east - the thread of light on the horizon is I-70 which is the 6-lane interstate passing in front of the Walmart and Lowe's. Just this side of I=70 is 40 Highway which leads to the Kansas City skyline on the horizon. Slightly to the left of the KC skyline you'll see a bright rectangle of light - which are floodlights on Royals Stadium. As you move to the right, you'll once again see I-70 in the distance. Hope this looks OK! Thanks for stopping by, and for all your wonderful comments, support, and of course all of your inspiring art and photos! Rod's Lair Facebook Twitter Girls From T.N.A. Fantastic!

Did you know this technique is used sometimes to produce background surround graphics for some types of game environment? This is too high-detail for that, but it's the same technique. A very nice image too.

NASA uses it too, for those sweeping views of the Martian landscape as seen by the Curiosity and Opportunity rovers.

Wow! Nicely done! I looked at it in full size (via your link), and then full view here on RR, and the RR version isn't bad at all! This is a terrific pano. Makes me want to come visit! (We'll be there in October, btw, and we'll set up a time to get together once we get a little closer.) :)

Cool photography Rod! Will your phantom lift my eos 3?

RodS Online Now!

9:52PM | Sat, 23 June 2018

LOL - I don't think a Phantom would lift your EOS!

Actually this was taken with a Mavic Pro, which is a bit smaller than a Phantom, so it wouldn't begin to lift it! 😁

though I'm only here a few days, I can't just do one session in your gallery, so I'm back for more. (Besides, you're so kind in my gallery, I feel I owe you more!) If I only leave a few comments per session, it's only because I tend to leave verrrrrry long comments on your work, so I have to sacrifice quantity for---well, length! I won't say "quality" 'cause I'm not sure how much of that is present, lol...

I love the sweep of this, and how the mall and shops make this big splash of light-and-forms in the midst of all that midwestern darkness. And how, as we move to the right, KC shows up wayyyyyyyy back there, as a huge metropolis at the end of a long road (it really looks like I-70's the only road in creation that leads to that city). And I can see the stadium there too---your beloved Royals. (Thanks for pointing it out.) And the rest---a huge expanse of forest and homes, showing that there's so much more here as we move right of KC...it just goes on and on. You've done so many large scale photos, and one of the things I see in a lot of them is equilibrium, which I'm hard-put to explain. It's a generosity for all the details, you don't emphasize one or two, but let everything have an equal voice. (I mean this in your large landscapes, not in everything you shoot.) And the effect is gentle but quite sweeping. This shot has that feeling, even though you have very strong 'accents' in the malls, the main thoroughfare (I-70), and the noticeable houses, lights, stadium, etc. A really sweeping shot, and oh is this midwestern! I could be looking out the other side of my bldg, where we see the plains go on way beyond the city...Only. you have mountains not too far away from you: We don't have those nearby...beautiful pano, Rod. It's not just a pano, it's a beautiful shot.
