Description

ENCYCLOPEDIA GALACTICA Edition 428193 - Earth English EGO 0602-00911069611: Summary EGO 0602-00911069611 is the fifth satellite of EGO 0602-00911069544 - a fourteen (14) Jovian mass Y-dwarf or 'brown dwarf' informally named 'Freya' - and fourth life bearing world of 'Freya's Necklace'.1 In reality a water world with a (2.8% saline) global ocean that averages 140km in depth – 272km deepest known point – beneath 2 to 6km thick surface ice.2 Continual volcanism at the ocean floor creates hot water columns which warms the ocean and periodically melts the surface. This results in geysers and other reworking of the ice ensuring no long term external features. This body has no recognized common name.3 Mass 0.007 Earths, density 2.7g/cm3, diameter 3118km. Rotational axis tilt is 5.1 degrees with rotation captured to the orbital period of 151624 seconds (1.75 days).4 Orbital eccentricity 0.011, inclined 13.0 degrees, and mean distance of 1.01 million (106) km. Magnetic field is 0.1% the strength of Earth's. The interior is built upon a small liquid nickel-iron core – diameter ~550km. Around the core is a liquid silicate mantle that 'plastifies' as little as 2km beneath the crust. As such this moon displays a pseudo plate tectonics. The crust and upper mantle are nickel and iron poor pointing to long period of differentiation.5 These facts suggest that EGO 0602-00911069611 may have occupied a much tighter orbit around 'Freya' in the distant past. Biodiversity is difficult to estimate. Local ecologies are thermoconsumptive.6 Local biochemistry is carbon based. Complex organisms rely upon cupric-argentic oxidation for energy. But heredity is encoded using transcellular webs; a mechanism which gives rise to exceptionally long lived and self-mutative life forms. Every organism may be regarded as its own species. Genetic encoding transcends an organism's component cells. A consequence being that information retained by a web is several orders of magnitude greater than that retainable by known nucleic materials such as DNA.7 Local genetics have thus evolved error corrective functions much like parity. And even more remarkable, update functions which revise an organism's characteristics for survivability. In such biology, survival is the success of the individual over its genetic inheritance since genes rewrite themselves. Within an organism, cells perform functions based upon their location within the web. Cells are non-specialized, modular and easily replaced. This makes for very robust life forms which do not suffer from genetic aphasia. Components may wear out but are readily replaced if raw materials and energy are accessible.8 On EGO 0602-00911069611, 72% of all life forms bioluminance. The cause for this high percentage is not understood. However the inclusion of light reveals the existence of large well ordered communities beneath the ice layer.9 Within such locations local organisms are observed to live symbiotically, creating a collective environment suitable for all members. This raises the question of intelligences. These communities have indications of culture but no apparent technology. Thus some scholars refer to these localities as 'gardens' or by corresponding translation. This entry in the Encyclopedia Galactica I am dedicating to Lucinda (aka myrrhluz) as a belated birthday present – her birthday is the 2nd of June. Lucinda has been a long time fan of my Encyclopedia Galactica series and I have always looked forward to her remarks which are always thoughtful, imaginative and often witty.

My apologies Lucinda for not making this ready in time for your birthday. But I have learned that even fictional worlds can be profoundly enigmatic.

Lucinda's Renderosity gallery is extensive and filled with wonderful photographic art acquired from her extensive travels. She has a wonderful eye for colour and light. And she's very fond of cats – BONUS. Lucinda has been on hiatus from Renderosity for the last little while and is much missed by myself and others.

I hope you had a wonderful birthday and my best wishes for you and your loved ones in the coming year. Cheers from Canada! Clayton

Wonderful work! Who knows what also awaits us in the ocean depths of some of the gas giant satellites of our own solar system.

Thank you so much, Clayton! This is wonderful! Freya’s Necklace, a place my imagination has roamed with great pleasure! Since my imagination can float lazily over a world, with no worries about any physically inhospitable characteristics, I can read your words and be gazing in wonder at the temporary ice structures. Pathways of thinner ice snaking across the surface, or erupting in geysers, and sculptures of refrozen liquids make fascinating patterns that are all the more compelling for their transitory nature. “large well ordered communities beneath the ice layer. . . are observed to live symbiotically, creating a collective environment suitable for all members.” Now that would be something marvelous to see and fascinating to study! Lights beckoning the explorer onward. Beauty and curiosity an impossible combination to ignore.
Beautiful image! I see the luminescent life beckoning. The details of the worlds, against the sparkling velvet of space, brings home to me the richness and vastness of the Universe. I love your Encyclopedia Galactica series! They remind me of the enormity of ‘out there’ and of the excitement of discovery. They remind me to take the time to look up and wonder.
Thank you for this! I love it!

"But heredity is encoded using transcellular webs; a mechanism which gives rise to exceptionally long lived and self-mutative life forms. Every organism may be regarded as its own species." - Brilliant extrapolations. 10++++ I am still gob-smacked by the amazing, fully-fleshed out realms, vast and intimate, that you generate through your Encyclopedia Galactica. They should be published!
