Description

Little squirrel was almost home (a hole in this tree which she lined with pine needles and leaves) when she realized that she had some company on HER tree. Her arch enemy, a Red Tailed Hawk, had settled on a branch directly opposite her. Bad enough that there was one hawk, another joined his mate. Now two deadly predators were on her tree. Shaking from fear, little squirrel decided that night would soon come, and then she could scamper to her home. And so, she tried to cover herself with a pine branch and just wait. All the while the hawk sitting opposite her suspected something delicious was there, but she was tired and well sated from her day of successful hunting. When darkness came, the hawks tucked their heads into their wings and little squirrel fled to her home and jump into it faster than lightning. Before settling in, she grabbed a peanut she had stored and devoured it with subtle grunts of delight. ======== As some of you know, I live in NYC, actually Forest Hills, Queens. Perhaps it is difficult for some to believe, but we have a number of Red Tailed Hawks in our vicinity. They prey on pigeons, squirrels and rats. Can always tell when one is around because there are no pigeons flying around, and, if they do fly, it's close to the ground. Just the other day I was feeding pigeons in a nearby park when I got that prickly feeling I was being watched. I looked up directly at the hawk sitting on a branch a few feet from me. For a moment I experienced cognitive dissonance, but quickly realized it was a hawk meeting my eyes with hers--so beautiful...she flew away as fast as a bullet and was gone to pursue some pigeons--ones I had just fed. I should learn to bring my camera on my daily excursions.

this fantastic image comes with a wonderful story. that squirrel better be very, very quiet. I once saw a hawk carrying a squirrel across the road. he flew right in front of my windshield; poor squirrel was still squirming in those talons.

Great story Barb, image is super.

Yeah at times we have hawks flying around, all the doves are in hiding when it's flying around.

Earlier this year I was out smoking when I heard a squeeze like, turned around and a red tail hawk I believe had a dove on the ground and in its talons. I tried to pull out my phone for a pic, hawk freaked and flew off, dove scampered off and hid underneath the boat in Brian's back yard. Two days later I looked and dove was still hiding in fear. It took off when I got close.

A very cute story and a great illustration, the night atmo is superb! Fortunately, the little squirrel has been able to return to his house! 😄

Indeed, there are now many animal species living in cities, such as hawks.

My dog Bodie hates squirrels and if he could climb the tree, he would go after them. recently there was a squirrel on the ground next to the same tree. I knew a couple of acorns at it missing both times. I went out and realized it was dead. some plants were missing in the garden and I think it had ate them which killed it. I was going to put it in a sack so I could throw it away. anyway Bodie was watching me and I touched him on his back and he liked have jumped out of his skin. another squirrel was busy eating an acorn on my neighbors fence and I threw another acorn hitting it. it turned and looked me. it seemed like it was thinking "really?"

very good render and story
