Description

The third in my flurry of images of this ship, this one shows the Discovery II fully loaded with a set of 18 payload modules. The top and bottom rows are the standard passenger modules, carrying 200 passengers each on this run as it is only a three week journey. The modules with no windows or portholes are fully pressurised cargo modules that can take up to 250 metric tonnes each. The third type she is carrying are habitat modules, which can carry the same number of people as the passenger modules but cost more to purchase. Habitat modules can be transported down to the surface of a planet by a suitable shuttle and then set up for use as buildings, either temporarily or, if needed, for long term use. The Discovery II can carry one habitat deployment shuttle or two smaller shuttles. Usually explorer ships of this type don't carry a shuttle for deploying habitat modules, they instead are accompanied by another type of ship called a landing carrier, specialised for, you guessed it, carrying landing ships of various kinds. On this trip the habitat modules are being used to carry another 200 passengers each. You can also see the propulsion section of the ship here with the ship's registration number on it. This contains two fusion reactors, the faster-than-light drive and some ion drives for sub-light propulsion. The large gold tanks are for the ion propellant, the smaller ones contain coolant for the reactors. The ship will have more details next time I post and hopefully a pair of cradles for carrying landing/ferry shuttles. It's a lot of work but also fun, making this ship.

Keep up the cool work, and keep that imagination going. Nicely done.

Fantastic concept of what may someday come to pass. Assuming we don't destroy ourselves with stupidity first...
