Description
In S.India temple dancing Deva Dasi means a'servant of God'and dances spiritual dances.
Beneath that are Raja Dasi's who are servants of the king and dance about kings and wars.
Beneath them are Ranga Dasi's who are sevants of the stage and dance about normal people.
Beneath them are Folk and Filmi (Bollywood)dancers and beneath them are Nautch dancers.
Karanas are positions of the body (like yoga Asanas but more complicated)which are described in the Natya Shastra from 2500 years ago which are linked together to form dances.All mvements and gestures have a meaning and Karana 44 (Lata Vrshcika-Scorpion Creeping Down) means 'Blessings From Above'.Right hand (in Pataka Hasta)is Blessing,left hand (in Dola Hasta)means welcoming and standing on 1 leg indicates God or Heaven.
The clothes and jewels are based on a painting at Brihadesvara Temple in Tanjavoor,India (1000 ce).
