Description

Thought you might like a detailed close-up of one of the ten door panels from Ghiberti's "Gates of Paradise" seen two frames back. This panel shows Joshua to the left leading a crowd to Jericho. He halts at the Jordan River and pitches twelve tents. Above, people march around the city sounding trumpets, causing the city's walls to fall. "The 'Gates of Paradise' are famous because they mark major advances in rendering perspective, or receding space, and the human figure. Figures appear in various grades of relief---some nearly in the round, while others barely rise above the surface. They move forward and backward in the composition through architectural space. These advances allow the viewer look into an infinitely deep window onto the world---a uniquely Renaissance idea". [excerpt from a sign near the bronze doors in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art]

Stunning art and an outstanding capture. The Romans had the modeling down pretty well (see Trajan's Arch) but the Renaissance masters took it to a whole other level. Spectacular example.

As always, Mark gives first rate observations; and Trajan's Arch has amazing carving. (Should I say it? I get hoarse everytime I see it. Who can resist the Trajan Hoarse...) (sorry) But yes, Ghiberti packed whole landscapes into his panels, and this photo---which is really sterling, Bill---shows it beautifully. And he flattens the figures as we go back in space, so we clearly feel they're "back there," compared to the much fuller relief of the foreground figures. (The Renaissance introduced atmosphere, space, decay of light, all of it. In these flattened panels, Ghiberti still got space, and such stunning detail. Yikes, he was good.)

Everytime you photograph in museums, you come away with such fine results: You just know how to photograph works of art. It's such a special talent, you have to know that. Museum light is never easy on cameras, angles can be hard, then viewers, and shadows...this is a wonderful capture, and I feel like I'm there. Terrific capture. (How did this follow tanks, lol? Next time, you gotta show a Ghiberti with a big panzerkampfwagen in it. That would be a discovery!)

Last time I saw this was in Grace Cathedral, San Francisco. Didn't have my camera so I never got the chance to take photos of the door panels. Your photo is so very good it should be in a book or brochure illustrating the gates. I see some of our friends have beat me to several of my intended comments. Anahata's comment jumping from tanks to Ghiberti gave me a chuckle. By the way, I've found my photos of the USS Alabama and of the tank museum in Skövde, and display in the university's park, if there's an interest I'll scan and post. :-)

So this is one of the first 3D renders, long before Poser and DAZ... I suspect this took even longer to render than an Iray image..

It's so amazing to me to see the delicious amount of detail.. I mean just look at the drapery in their clothing. And the texturing of the armor (?) on the third guy from the left. It's phenomenal... I see a few guy carrying the Ark, too.

OK... I have GOT to go see this in person.....
