I will supply an alternative view. The back upright frame and the front horizontal frame are supposed to overlap improperly (i.e., a picture of something that cannot be built) -- it would be the perfect demon trap and couldn't be in this world. For another example, please see the "Official M.C.Escher Website" www.mcescher.com ; click "Galleries"; then "Recognition and Success 1955-1972"; and scroll to "Belvedere 1958 Lithograph". You'll see several examples: the columns, ladder, ... especially note the figure on the bench trying to understand the framework in his own hands. Enjoy
