Description

Once upon a time there lived a man named Dave. Dave like to poke things with sticks. One day while checking out the sites in Greenville in the Southern land of the Carolinas he found a fire ant hill. Now even though he was told not to antagonize fire ants, he just could not resist. Dave found a stick and called his soon to be bride Cheri to come check this out. Cheri stopped photographing the fountain and wandered over by her man, who was proudly holding a stick. He said hey grab a shot of this. So I, I mean she proceeded to photograph the inactive fire ant hill, which had already obviously been disturbed by Dave. He then jabbed the ant hill several times and caused a flurry of swarming fire ants to come out. In seconds they were everywhere on the hill. After finding no one or thing on their hill just as fast returned to their home. Here is the collage from that.

If this was a horror movie, the antagonist of the ants would have backed up in fright, then slipped and fallen, then swarmed over by the fierce and fiery critters, who would exact a terrible revenge upon their oppressor. Like I always say, let sleeping fire ants lie.

Dave is very lucky they didn't spy him and his stick! But your photo did remind me of this cute "ant" video by Rammstein http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwnV7FIUsSs

Honestly ... men! Can't leave well enough alone. Good thing they didn't swarm him. Yikes! Great captures of the event, though. :)

Oh, no, no ,no! Must NOT mess with the fire ants!! And to call his sweet bride to be to catch the event with her camera. shakes head Perhaps Dave needs to be poked with a stick to get him to behave! Fire ants can be very dangerous!!! Glad it all worked out. Phew, LOL.

Ha...I love this! Great collage and a wonderful way to document that rarest of species: the fire-ant-poking human male. Fire ants are actually rather wonderful creatures, in that itchy, stingy sort of way. Your story gave me quite a laugh and I love that you actually got close enough to photograph these...sounds like you and Dave are a match made in Heaven...he pokes fire ants and you photograph the event for all of posterity. Imagine the wonders that could happen off in some far off land. Dave: Hey, there's a thing with great big teeth. Gimme a stick, I'm gonna see what happens if I poke it. Cheri: Okay...let me get my camera ready. I've dealt with insects enough to know ONE THING...they're smarter than we credit them with being...that whole "insect brain not being developed" is a load of hooey. I suspect that eventually, the ants of that particular colony will come to Recognize Dave soon enough, he just has to risk the itches by poking the mound a couple of times more. They'll come out, see that its him, then go back in without so much as an antenna twitch. Just their way of saying: "Oh, it's just Dave...pretend to be busy and he'll go away." Yellow jackets do that with me, usually after sniffing around and twitching their antennas and going: "Hmmm...no tea...not worth the bother, then." This is a rockin' great collage. Fire ants...they're kinda cute in that fire ant sort of way.

Fun series, as a child I encountered that amazing behavior, but lacked the wisdom of an older more experienced person about when to STOP poking the ant mound. Needless to say I got a few painful lessons in what fire ants do when you annoy them. Great set of shots.
