The Arado Ar. E 555 was one of Germany's dreams for a jet powered, long range, strategic bomber that would be able to reach American shores. This iteration was one of various versions proposed by the Arado company in response to the Luftwaffe's so-called "Amerika Bomber" project. They never made it past the drawing board, cancelled because they were deemed too expensive, and more likely because dwindling resources made their development and manufacture improbable. This was to be a six engine version, manned by three crewmen and protected by automated gun turrets in the same vein as the B-29. The chilling prospect of squadrons of these threatening bomb platforms was avoided by Germany's diminished capacity and the "too late" factor at that point in the war. Still, it is sobering to consider what might have transpired in the right circumstances and timing, and with more support for these deadly programs. Fate definitely played Germany the losing hand. I've always liked these almost sci-fi design concepts that the Germans entertained in the war, and I enjoy playing with these "What if" renders.. The non-conventional designs, the very creative application of new concepts in aircraft, and the engineering prowess to realize them is a definite spark to my imagination. The intent of these concepts is the only sobering factor. It is interesting to consider and muse on the possible outcomes that were avoided by the Allied victory. Arado Ar.
