Description

Most of you won't care about this, but those of my regular gallery viewers who have to endure a few years of me complaining about my ancient 10 year old single core XP computer might. I've been saving pennies for a looooooooong time for a new computer. Well my pets, my stenching little cherubs, my lovers and sinners, you will no longer have to endure my whining and moaning. I got the new computer. Big fancy i7 with 12 gigs of memory and multiple cores and blah blah blah. I'm happy. Very, very, very happy. I'm just scratching the surface of getting the old files ported over to this machine, and that will take a few days. So I made this test scene on my old computer before I shut it down to see how long it would take to render. The old machine took a little over 1 1/2 hours to render this scene, and that was with the raytracing turned off for the water and the loincloth which uses Poser hair because my machine couldn't handle it. This new machine, with raytracing on, took 4 minutes. 1.5 hours on the old vs. 4 minutes on the new, and the new has the hair fibers of the loincloth and the water turned on to raytracing (which the old system didn't do) now granted, this scene is basic as far as lighting goes. I haven't installed any of my fancy light sets yet, so this scene is a little dark and a little blah. But still. (pauses to wipe the tears of joy from his eyes and get downs on his knees to offer a sincere prayer of thanks to God) Since this computer costs me a paycheck or two, it will be some time before I fufill my dream of getting Cinema 4D, Zbrush, and other expensive goodies. But I think I can honestly say that my renders will now be a little more complex and fun to look at because I'll be able to add more to them without my computer crashing like it used to. Yays!

now, I'm jealous :) I could only afford to upgrade my ram to 6 GB (tried for 8, but one stick was bad), and a newer-ish GPU. Wish I had the bucks for a whole new machine. Still having to use Linux, and am just getting stable enough to try Poser/Carrara with WINE. Getting closer. Hope the porting goes well, and looking forward to new, faster rendering you'll be doing:)

There is no scale large enough to measure how happy I am with the new setup. Got about half of the Poser models installed. I've got soooo mucn crud from all these years past that I can't remember what's what. Sometimes the names of the files are no help and you end up installing some piece of junk prop you didn't want. I need to clean it all out and start a better system of organization. I have in mind a new set of poses for M4. I expect it will happen, but not sure when I'll get the time. I'm basing these new poses on dance moves from videos of male strippers...so they should be pretty saucy. They'll take a while to do. There's a lot of shoulder bending that I'm sure M4 will give me trouble with.

If you bend M4 the right way, he doesn't seem to mind too much. But he can be a real beeeeeaaaatch sometimes! I am so happy for you getting your new dream maching and I look forward to viewing many many many of the images you create on this magic medium! Congratulations! I hope it continues to exceed your expectations of it for a very long time!

~Congratulations! Looks like you got a great machine there! I am jealous....still working on my little 13 inch MacBook....and rapidly running out of room!~

I know how that is. I had to wipe my drive twice because I ran out of room and the operating system wouldn't work. Poser and all this content I have take up a lot of room. The old comptuer is now basically a storage drive. It's a hassle not having enough drive space. I wish I owned Dell so I could send you all one of these things. I'm in love with this machine. I'm going to marry it. For most people this would be a nice step up, but nothing too dramatic. For me, having waited so long to buy a new machine, this is like going from stone age to space age. My old machine was top of the line when I bought it...but that was back before dual cores had been invented. I've never gone this long without getting a new machine and I'll never go that long again. It was PAINFUL. I had no idea that Poser had so much power if you've got the tools to unleash it.

The fast render time is what I am envious of--it usually takes me 7 or 8 full renders before I am happy with a scene, and I don't use anything fancy at all..being able to use raytracing, fur, transparency and multiple and hdr lighting would be awesome. And you will be able to render a scene a dozen times and get it just the way you want without eating up a couple of days. I'm looking for lots and lots of skimpily-clad M4 renders in the future ;)

Exactly. Lighting is the big thing for me. I'm never happy with it. But I just didn't have the resources to render a scene more than once unless I had tons of patience and literally all day long to rerender it several times. I need to go to bed but I can't stop playing with Poser. There's so many functions, particularly with raytracing, that I could never use before. Tee-hee-hee! (squeals like a little schoolgirl and skips around the room with glee)
