Description

Ambrose seems to be using commonwealth for bureaucracy. Common wealth derives from the Latin phrase de (of) re (the) publica (commonwealth). Another word which derives from the same phrase is Republic. Republic means common wealth or dealing with matters of spending wealth on the commons or administering the wealth of the commons for the welfare of the commons. Cicero wrote a very good book entitled "De Re Publica". "The Devil's Dictionary" is a satirical work by Ambrose Bierce. It originally appeared as a series of articles in newspapers. These were taken and became part of the routines of traveling entertainers, the 19th century equivalent of stand up comedians today. Later it was published as "The Cynic's Dictionary" and then later when Mr. Bierce got more control, as "The Devil's Dictionary". For those of you who don't get satire, it is not meant as being a literal guide to how the world should be. It is meant to contrast the way the world is to how the world should be by honestly, or even exaggerating how the world actually is. These are intended to be illustrations of the definitions of "The Devil's Dictionary" which also use elements from my freestuff available here at Renderosity.

It's a satirical dictionary by a great American author. These definitions appeared in the editorial or humor section of newspapers in the American West in the late nineteenth century. It's a classic.
