Description

The chief approached me. “Sean, that spell you do…” “Yeah?” “Do you remember when you hunted down that sniper for Colonel Gillman?” “Hunted down? I retraced his steps for maybe ten minutes and lost him.” “Right. That. Can you do that again?” “You want me to retrace the sniper’s steps again? I can show you how he went if we get on base.” “No. Not the sniper. Someone else. The cemetery had to reopen a casket to retrieve something that wasn’t supposed to be buried. When they did, they found a second body.” “That’s another idea we talked about in the chat.” “You need to rename the chat to artistic murder chat.” “Maybe. What are you looking for?” “The cemetery has cameras inside and out. If he didn’t avoid all of them, we’d finally have a picture we can use.” “I don’t mind helping. It’s my job. But why not just check the cameras?” “We’re looking for a starting point. There are days of video. They can’t bury the body until we settle this. The funeral was a week ago.” “Why the delay in burying the body?” “Between the killings and the rains, they were backlogged at the cemetery. We don’t want to delay it anymore.” I nodded. “I’ll follow him as long as I can, but the spell takes more out of me this way. I’ll probably have problems. It’s something I accept. Can you?” “Do you have a doctor we can call?” “There was one working with Doctor Knox. He’s in my phone.” “Take precautions. Be careful.” Precautions were Powerade, Almond Joys, and an extra vitamin. They would help some depending on how long I had to cast for. The cemetery caretaker was waiting for Roy and me. He eyed me cautiously and spoke to Roy rather than me. Roy explained what I would do. “Magic?” The man raised an eyebrow. “He better not disturb anything.” “I won’t.” “Will there be a mess? Some kind of herbs or something sprinkled around?” He was still looking at Roy. “No, it’s just an incantation,” I assured him. “Then what’s in the bag?” It was the first time he spoke to me directly. “Stuff to renew my energy when I’m done. What I’m going to do is no more invasive than what we’re doing now. My people held great respect for the dead.” “It really isn’t,” Roy assured him. “Very well. Should I wait in the other room?” “No. It’s better if you stay.” I cast the spell. I hoped the second body hadn’t been there long. Since I didn’t have a specific time, I had to start watching from the current time and watch back to when we saw what we needed. I had the spell going as fast as I could. We saw people coming in and out. We saw them find the body. They took something from the casket, but it was too blurry to identify. It took a while before we saw a man put the second body in the coffin. He wore a ball cap pulled down to help hide his face. “Keep going?” I wrote in my sketchbook. Roy nodded. “We might get him at a good angle to see under the cap.” We followed when he left with the woman over his shoulder. It was night, and he avoided most of the cameras. Outside was more of the same. “There,” the caretaker said, pointing. I glanced at the area but didn’t stop following the man in the image. It was dark. With the hat, we might not get a good picture of him. We needed to see if there were more. My vision started to swim. “Watch,” I wrote to Roy. “Are you okay?” He asked. I shook my head. “Maybe you should stop.” I shook my head again. The more angles, the better. This was the first chance we had to get a legal image of him. As we continued following his path, the caretaker pointed out another camera. I didn’t bother looking. By this time, I could barely see. I staggered. “Sean, it’s time to stop,” Roy said. I raised my middle finger to show what I thought of that idea. We would follow him until I lost him or I passed out. The spell failed as he slipped through the fence. It was iron. I collapsed, and my whole body trembled. I vomited as I fought to stay conscious.
