Description

Fortification of the fortified towns of Poitou On July 19, 1367, a royal ordinance prescribed the nationalization of the strongholds. The masters of castles had to put them in a position to withstand a siege, provide them with food and ammunition, provide them with artillery and all this at their own expense. At the time it was promulgated, however, this ordinance must not have concerned Pierre De Montfaucon, then Lord of Saint-Mesmin. The English Poitevins (including Guillaume Larchevêque, suzerain of Pierre De Montfaucon) only joined the French party after November 30, 1372, the date of the English surrender at the Château de Thouars, in front of the headquarters established by Duguesclin.
