Description

Wikipedia says: The cattle egret is a short, stocky heron about 18 to 22 inches (46 to 56 cm) tall, with a wingspan of 35 to 38 inches (88 to 96 cm) and weighing 9.5 to 18.1 ounces (270 to 512 grams). It has a relatively short thick neck, a sturdy bill, and a hunched posture. The non-breeding adult has mainly white plumage, a yellow bill and grayish legs. During the breeding season, adults have yellowish orange plumes on the back, breast and crown. Originally native to parts of Asia, Africa and Europe, it has undergone a rapid expansion in its distribution and successfully colonized much of the rest of the world in the last century. The nest is a platform of sticks in trees or shrubs. Cattle egrets exploit drier and open habitats more than other heron species. Their feeding habitats include grasslands, pastures and farmlands. They often accompany cattle or other large mammals, catching insect and small vertebrate prey disturbed by these animals. The adult cattle egret has very few predators. In our area they seem to eat insects on or around plants and tiny lizards like geckos. If you zoom, check out the intensity of her eyes! Photo taken today. On a nearby farm, where we live here in OZ - there are lots of these cool looking Egrets always hanging around the local herd of cows, but they usually are very shy and when you are trying to get close to take a picture of them, they just take off ;(( but you did a sterling job here Dana, getting this one in the can ;)) BB
