Description

I really enjoy the results rps53 gets applying various artistic effects to his renders, so I decided to check out one of the apps he uses, called Painnt (available for Mac via the App Store). It's so much fun! I had already prepared this scene as well as a followup scene using my usual method, which is to bring renders through the Camera Raw filter in Photoshop before adding a frame and signature. But when I saw what I could do with Painnt, I decided to try one of the filters on this scene, and this is the result! I love the storybook illustration style it produced :-) For the "story" and full credits, please see the render I posted just before this one, Castle Giant Avenges His Brother.

It is a wonderful effect. There are so many tools out there that expand what can be done with a render. The times they are a changing.

This is one of those rare cases where I find the smaller version easier to look at. Probably the illustration style where detail is removed and the story is told by the ensemble of outline groups and zooming in loses context. Probably I am being over analytic but the psychology of vision has long been an interest of mine.

Very cool!!! I think the illustration effect sells the story better!

Thanks for the comment! The illustration style certainly makes the scene seem less "threatening," and that works for me :-)

I am a big fan of illustrative styles and this looks very good. It reminds me of transformers but also of Kazu Kibuishi's Amulet, the Stonekeepers Curse. Very impressive scene and styling.

Thanks for your comment! I love young adult fantasy stuff but haven't read a lot of it in graphic novel form. Kazu Kibuishi's series looks interesting, and I can see from the cover that there's some kind of large being made with gears and is that parts of houses? (can't really tell b/c it's small) Anyway, the credit for the CastleGiants figure all goes to Summoner; I just came up with the idea for how to use him :-)
