Description
"You allowed her to do it! What were you thinking of?" JS thundered entering the great hall with Eve. "No one guessed she could do something?"
Maurr, Puhrr and the others shook their heads sheepishly.
"Jay, this is unfair: we were reading her mind but neither I nor you realized she was going to jump." Eve thought.
"True, Lady Behrr smirked and she did it just to spite her!" JS mind-replied. "But they should have tied her with a rope or Puhrr could take her arm in arm. They knew she was a creature of impulse. Must I teach them everything?"
"Come on, say it," Maurr told JS, "before it chokes you."
"What?"
"Jerks!"
"I'd rather say dickheads!" JS said with a stern voice, but a quiver on his lips betrayed that, after all, he wasn't so pissed. "Let see the positive side, it saved us the hassle of dispatching her later. Everyone saw we honoured her and she killed herself. We'll make her a State funeral."
"This will definitely play in our favor," Maurr said, "but she appointed Sihrr as the Great Red Matriarch."
"One thing at a time." JS replied, "Where's the Great Blue Matriarch? Let's not fuck this up too."
"She's not in her palace." Rohrr said. "Our men have ransacked it from top to bottom."
"Likely she was a forced 'guest' here." Lady Behrr suggested.
"Jay!" Eve thought. She felt a thrill of fear, despair, loneliness, but it was quite different from what she was expecting. JS followed her mental track and nodded.
"I think I found her." Eve told the others.
"She's a child!" Xahrr exclaimed when they arrived at the Hall of the Scales. The child watched them with eyes full of fear, not knowing what to expect.
"You didn't say she was a little girl," Maurr said.
"I had never seen her!" Xahrr replied, "I just knew she was from the house of Fihrr."
"She is the only survivor of the house of Fihrr." Eve corrected. She was reading the girl's mind and saw the GHOULs had killed her family in front of her eyes.
"Come on, sweetie." Lady Behrr smiled, but the girl shook her head and ran toward JS, clinging to his leg.
"She trust him because he is not a Rasharr!" Eve exclaimed. "She prefers an alien to her compatriots."
JS bent and the little girl took off his glasses staring into his eyes.
"You're safe now." He said, tousling her hair. "What's your name?"
"Zehrr."
"OK, Zehrr, this lady will take your place as the matriarch, that's fine?"
Zehrr nodded.
Looking at the others JS sighed: "Problem solved. Now we have to consolidate Puhrr's rights to the succession."
"That hag of my mother chose Sihrr that bigoted GHOUL sister of mine." Puhrr pointed out still shaken by the events.
"But you're the consecrated heir, and you haven't been deconsecrated, Puhrr!" Maurr cried.
"That's true!" Xahrr confirmed.
"Excellent! Yahrr will repeat the consecration ceremony according to the Sacred Sagas. This will strengthen your position as the Orthodox Matriarch and weaken Sihrr's." JS suggested.
"The GHOULs will say the Matriarch appointed Sihrr on her death bed, so to speak! Her claim to the office isn't so tenuous. Moreover they'll stress Puhrr' flight into space." Xahrr objected.
"We can also do disinformation leaking the intel that Lady Rihrr appointed Sihrr under duress." JS grinned.
"We'll propose a council in the Hall of the Scales to decide which of these two claims has ground." Maurr proposed.
"Where we'll oppose the True Ortodoxy to them!" Lady Behrr uttered.
"Our claim is stronger since it represents both the Blues and the Reds." Xahrr pointed out.
"The Admiral and Sihrr will never give up." Puhrr retorted.
"Do you really believe that a Council will tip the scales in our favour?" Eve asked sceptically.
"We are in the right!" Maurr stated trustingly.
"Actually," JS said and threw his sword onto a pan, "this will tip the scales in our favour. We'll have to fight."
