Description

Here we see just some of the headstones of the more than 400,000 military people buried in the Arlington National Cemetery (just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C.). I took this representative photo just after visiting the nearby grave of President John F. Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline. The stones above mark the graves of numerous people with remarkable stories. The large stone at the foot of the tree marks the grave of a man (Brigadier General John H. Page) who served during four wars: the Civil War (1861-1865), the Indian Campaigns, the Spanish American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902). That's at least a 41 year career of service... If you look up the hill slightly at the obelisk with the name WHEELER on it (zooming may help), this marks the grave of "Fightin' Joe Wheeler", the only officer to ever serve as a general officer in both the Confederate States Army (CSA) and afterward in the United States Army (USA). The stories go on and on for every rank from Private to General and Admiral. I could spend weeks here...but a 2 hour tour had to do for this trip:)

A wonderful capture. I must say that the most moving for me is the simple grave of Robert Kennedy.

So fascinating! We have a most interesting local cemetery but would never know the stories without a guided tour, which I have done once.

Thanks Bill. All lined up as soldiers but each so very individual. 400,000 you say? My, where do they have the space for all? I'm astounded. I knew it was large, but this is amazing. And each, as you say, has his history. And each piece adds up to a whole. And how many are remembered today? Keep up the good work! :-)

A beautifully kept cemetery. I like to read the grave stones in the cemetery & read of the people buried there.
