When working with the Dome, ever notice the x, y, and z rotation dials? Until this deceptively simple image, I always ignored them. But in order to get the sun/shadow line to angle the way the scene required and place Miranda on both sides of the line, I had to open a can of worms. What a tedious, boring, brain-dead, trial and error system. But how do I really feel? It's a hair-pulling, teeth jarring, obscenity laden, exasperating way to spend an hour. :-)
A small fortune awaits the person who can create a straightforward utility that loads a rotational sphere and positions the Dome's sun in the exact spot clicked on. HDRI's are a phenomenal technology I wouldn't dream of doing without. But right now one vendor's north is another's west. It's a mess.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Here is what I do.
- Switch the dome off.
- Think of your viewpoint window as crosshairs.
- Select a point light and tick Viewport.
- If you want soft light, change setting from point to disk or rectangular, increase both sizes (default is 10, 40 is what I use most)
- Looking at your render here, skip 4, adjust the outer radius of the light cone, which regulates the spread of light (can't look how that is called properly since I am sitting in a train).
Not only does this save you time & hassle, you can also color that light to your liking. If the overall render needs more lighting you could always add some light with an emiisive sphere outside the visible frame or use one of the invisible light emitters, like Fabiana's AlterGlow face light sphere.

I've played with the Y-rotation a bit, but I'm still learning my way around DS. I believe you can actually input latitude and longitude values as well as time-of-day and get the lighting for that time and place. I'm going to turn on the GPS for my camera and give this a try one of these days...
