Description

The exotic red flowers of the cannonball tree smell like expensive perfume and bloom for only one day each. They are without nectar, but bees are rewarded for visiting them with a special kind of pollen. The cannonball tree ( called ' nagalingam' in Hindi), is sacred in India, as it is associated with the male fertility of Shiva. The fruits that come from the flowers are a botanical curiosity because they mimic the shape and size of cannon balls, but, in contrast to the flowers, they release a fetid aroma at maturity when they hit the ground and break open. Cannonball trees grow in the humid, low elevations of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. I took the photo earlier this year in February.

Thank you so much for your visits and nice comments on my previous Rajasthani picture. Have a nice week!... Please zoom in for greater overall impression!

Quelles magnifiques couleurs!

I've seen this flower several times here in Singapore where I live! Never been able to find out what sort of plant it is... until now!

Very exotic-looking species. Loved the balmy fragrance, too. (I'd love it if there were some cannonball tree essential oil. ;) ) You did a superb close-up shot of this blossom!
