Description
Although the use of toxic chemicals as weapons dates back thousands of years, the first large scale use of chemical weapons was during World War I. They were primarily used to demoralize, injure, and kill entrenched defenders, against whom the indiscriminate and generally very slow-moving or static nature of gas clouds would be most effective. The types of weapons employed ranged from disabling chemicals, such as tear gas, to lethal agents like phosgene, chlorine, and mustard gas.

A fine visual history. Eventually WW 1 gas masks were developed for use by horses and mules. Interesting that the german soldiers protected their animal in this makeshift fashion.

I only recently learned about the role of the phosphorus tetrahedron in organo-phosphates. Somewhere in my first images here is a tetrahedron inscribed in a clear sphere. It was truly tasteless!

Great historical documentation. When we went through basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas in spring of 1963 going through the gas chamber (tear gas) was part of the training. Much later, in 1985, before we deployed to Spain we had a follow-up course at Luke AFB. By the end of the day the trainers got their point across - gas is terrifying. Still later during the First Gulf War the big thing was protection against Anthrax. Mask, MOP 4 (full suit and mask sealed against the outside). Unfortunately chemical agents are still being used by rogue nations and may be used by individual nut cases.
