Description

Spent all afternoon yesterday driving and walking around the National Military Park at Vicksburg, Mississippi. The guns fell silent here almost 151 years ago on the 4th of July 1863. That was the day, after a 47 day siege, that the Confederate States of America (CSA) surrendered the City of Vicksburg and its 30,000 man army that manned its ramparts. The Army was surrounded and out of food, ammunition and time.

That's a great image. I love the drama of the sky against the cannon. You've done a great job of conveying history. I'm glad you had a good time ... and that I didn't go! :*

Wonderful capture; the scenery is so lush and lovely, and the lines of the gun all point at the beauty!

I like... two things... I wonder how this would look in bkack and white, and two... wondering about wheel on left cropped as it is. Not sure if you could have gotten whole thing into shot and what could have restricted you. Just random thoughts. Still a beauty!

The ominous clouds... could it happen again? The name reminds me of another Vickburg. Nice shot. :-)

on the Western Front. Or at least around Vicksburg. A most appropriate POV and overall war mood in this capital capture of the six(?) pounder and environs, Bill. I remember, as a young recruit, riding through Vicksburg on a train heading for a military base in Georgia.

A great shot here, Bill! It has a wonderful somber feel, that is enhanced by the cloudy sky. A wonderful mood shot!

The last bunch of shots have had dark day light, like you had lots of overcast skies. That adds real drama to this (as tara says), like the sky is reflecting the brooding presence of that big cannon. You captured a kind of dull "sheen" on the cannon---dull because it's not a high sheen, but it's a sheen all the same. And it gives it a kind of sensual feel. And your pov allows it to command the scene, peeking above the horizon just enough to command it. And, with all those threatening clouds, it looks like the gun is pointing to troubling times ahead...A shot rich in suggestion and mystery, and showing great respect for this old elephant of combat (ie, the cannon). All quiet, but still filled with mystery and foreboding. A very respectful shot.
