Description

"As alike as two peas in a pod" or two halves of the same calabash. Amazing how many of these proverbs are so close in symbology, or analogical or metaphorical reasoning, to similar proverbs from other peoples. Why African Proverbs? Google digitized all the old books in libraries around the world and made many of them available for free to people like me. I found a number of old books of real African Proverbs, real African songs and folk stories, and real African cultural traditions that had not been rewritten and edited to fit a template created by the Communist Party during the Cold War. More than that, real African proverbs and wisdom stands up well in comparison from that of other lands and peoples. It was pretty nice to discover this. Then I got bored and it occurred to me to do some pictures of naked women citing proverbs from old books as a kind of digital art project. I thought why not do 'African Proverbs'. So that is how this came about. These are real tribal proverbs from the Hausa people, available in a book published by Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co. of London in 1905. The book was writte by Captain G. Merrick, RGA. The title of the book is "Hausa Proverbs". You should be able to get a copy in either PDF or Ebook format easily online from Google Books. So, here are 'African Proverbs' presented with completely gratuitous female nudity because it's fun. The scene is the Serengeti background from Daz with African Huts from Daz. The firepit and barrels are from my free stuff four corners keep first floor. The model is V2 with skin textures from my free stuff. Enjoy. Some other books of African Proverbs include “African Native Literature, Or Proverbs, Tales, Fables &…” by Sigismund Wilhelm Koelle was published in 1854. This is a collection of such material in the Kanuri or Bornu language, and includes translations and a Kanuri-English Vocabulary. This language is from Southeastern Nigeria, Southeast Niger, western Chad and Northern Cameroon. This is Central Africa just south of the Sahara to the coast. The author was a Prussian Missionary doing translations from African languages into European Languages. He has a few books in this area and should be of interest as an author to people who want to know more about African language and culture. Christian Friedrich Schlenker gives us “A Collection of Temne Traditions, fables and proverbs: with an…” published in 1861. The Temne people are the largest ethnic group in Sierra Leone. It includes a Temne English Vocabulary. This may be of special interest to people looking for real African wisdom and traditions. . A. E. Ruskin gives us “Proverbs, fables, similes and sayings of the Bamongo...” published in 1897. This has the proverb, a literal list of the Bamongo word with its meaning, and a translation to show what the proverb means. It is an interesting volume. Bamongo is an alternative name for the Bushong language which is spoken in the Congo region of Africa. Robert Southerland Rattray and Johann Gottlieb Christaller give us “Ashanti Proverbs…” published in 1916. The Ashanti are a West African people who had a large influence in that part of Africa prior to the colonial period. "West African Studies" was published in 1899 and is apparently a well researched book by Mary Henrietta Kingsley and a number of other authors like Charles Napoléon Cardi (comte de.) and ?John Harford.
