Description

Welcome. Thanks or looking! It seems that "Boldly Going" inspired a little return to the art world. "Accretion" is basically a re-imagining of an old POV-Ray piece that I did called "Asteroids" from about 10 years ago. What a difference a decade makes! Note: This is a big image with some subtle effects - you might want to go for the full sized view. So, here we have a DAZ Studio render with no DAZ content whatsoever. All of the objects in the scene were either created in Vue (the foreground terrain, the planet, the cratered moon) from primitives with baked in displacement, downloaded from a NASA website (the asteroids are all real asteroids) or downloaded and modified in Vue (the 'hero' asteroids in the foreground). The planet atmosphere and the rings are primitives with trans maps applied. The background was done using the same techniques as the one in 'Boldly Going' and the lighting rig was recycled from that piece as well. The Nebula in the backgound is the same one used in the original 'Asteroids' image from long ago... yes I still have the source file. I also went out and re-downloaded the same NASA asteroids - so this really is something of a rework/homage to the earlier piece (which is, quite honestly, not good enough to post... anywhere). The materials are a combination of pwEffect procedural textures and pwSurface materials with painted textures. The foreground, middle asteroids and ringed planet were rendered in separate passes and composited with the backgound in Photoshop. I used Amico Perry's awesome 'Luce' plugin to do some subtle volumetric effects with the planet and asteroids and the lens flare was again provided by 'Knoll Light Factory.' On the whole a fun and interesting little piece I did over the last few weeks to relieve stress. I had a blast, really like it and I hope you enjoy it as well. As always, feel free to leave whatever constructive critique you'd like in the comments section - your feedback is always appreciated! "Accretion" is dedicated to the team at EMC Fairfield - you are all so skilled at putting whole worlds together from almost nothing....

Very cool! Ah, POV-Ray-- I remember so many hours tweaking text files and running back to the computer to check on the progress of the render!

This definitely needs to be viewed full-size to really appreciate it, there's alot more detail and spectacular things going on than you'll notice in either the thumbnail or even the reduced-size preview. Spectacular work!
