Description

The Lower treasury in the Papal Palace at Avignon, France contained several vaults under the stones of the floor. Most of them had plexiglass windows covering them so people could see inside. But, I found this one most interesting because it showed the stone covering. If you look at the close-up inset you can see it is still a deposit for coins. :)

It looks like people are throwing in coins like a wishing well. Fascinating stuff.

Yes, I see all the coins in the depth, Katherine, and I wonder how many people would already have been there, throw their currencies down, perhaps all at the same time with their wishes. A most interesting shot, dear friend. I'm still impressed by all your fantastic vacation-souvenirs ;-).

Fantastic capture and information. That is from the past, I wonder where they keep their stash now? The pope preaches about erecting walls is not good, he, or the Vatican, should practice what they preach!

in addition to being informative, your montage shots also have wonderful shots. The shot on the left has a heavy dungeon look about it, and we can really feel the stone and its thickness. Also, the light below looks almost lit from within---as if the stone had light inside it. There's a big chunk of white light down there too---it heightens the mystery of this opening. You cropped it so the opening dominates, and it's sooooooo medieval. The shot on the upper right does show the coins---which, from this vantage point, looks like little creatures, or mushrooms. And of course---with no disrespect to any faith---it's sad that so many riches were stored in these places, while people for miles around were poor. (A fact of many religious governments, it's not indigenous to one, by any means.) I love the photos, and I can't get over the light down there. It's almost spooky!
