Hi @ all.
Back with a new piece. Very simple, very clear. I've done it as a gift for a friend. She wanted something to put on the door to her kitchen and the only things she gave me to go with were "blue" and "simple". And there was the idea! She loves "2001" just like I do. That's it. An hommage to Mr. Clarke.
Hell of a thing to do. The station is one of the free models available on the net. It lay for a while on my hdd but I've got no clue where I got it. If you think you know from where it is, let me know so that I can give proper credits. (update: http://www.2001-3d-archive.info/ The model is from this wonderful site. Thanks!)
The planet was the hardest part. Render clouds in that size (the original picture is 3200x1000 pixels) wasn't easy. I tried it with a map of 8000x4000, too blurry, then 12000x6000, still too blurry (at this stage the system got a bit unstable and very slow) so I had to go with a map of 16000x8000 (now that took some time to work with photoshop and my machine nearly collapsed and I had very much time between the worksteps to do other things. Reading, cooking coffee for example.)
Anyway, I think it turned out well and stop babbling now. Here's the new piece:

This is very, very awesomely done. I had to check the Details for I thought I had accidentally gone into the photography galleries. Upon seeing this image, I went strait into Vue and started to try and reproduce the image to see if I could work out how you did it. Well, I cannot and would love to see a tutorial on it, if you have the inkling to do one. I am really impressed with this render and you have full marks for it. Well done and keep it up Gareth:¬)

Wow, folks. Thanks a big lot for all the nice comments. Makes me really proud. Maybe I've to explain some steps in the making of this picture. It's done in Vue and Photoshop. Planet maps where 16000x8000 pixels to get this detailed clouds and ocean. The final render was 3200x1000 at very high details. I rendered first the ocean with reflectivity and highlights and than the clouds only in black and white. I put this two together in photoshop and added the atmosphere also in photoshop (this way I have more control over it). Than followed the render of the station which I also added after the render in photoshop. Final composition and postwork also photoshop. So, it's not intirely vue but it's very much vue. (maybe I should've posted this in the mixed media section). Anyway, I'm really glad so many of you liked it. Thanks. Frieso
