When I was working on this piece, I got to wondering about the best altitude for a dogfight and came across some interesting information. It's relative depending on the aircraft performance. The WW 1 range of 5,000-15,000 feet increased to 20,000-35,000 in WW 2, (today maybe about 20,000 to 50,000 feet) based on the aircraft's "best performance" range. If an aircraft's service ceiling altitude is reached, it has almost no spare energy to maneuver...except down. Usually in a dogfight, as the fight progresses the protagonists expend their energy and the fight gets closer and closer to the ground. This amounts to a very dangerous situation that often results in a fiery impact with the lowest service level, 0 altitude, mother earth.

Oh, yeah, one Iraqi Mig-29 in the first gulf war tried to get an F-111 and the pilot of the F-111, with no air-to-air weaponry on board, defeated him simply by flying as fast as he could close to the ground while weaving and jinking. The Mig-29 lost track of where the ground was and hit it. Nice image as usual, and very nice choice of Spitfire model.
