Description

This was a challenge that someone posted back in 2002. The challenge was to try and render accurate caustics from the glass to match the photo as close as possible. The pic on the left is the photo, the reference pic. The pic on the right is my rendering. My pic was rendered with Vray in 3dsmax4, and it's as accurate as I can get it without a more accurate model of the glass, and simulating all the wine residue smeared inside the glass, fingerprints, etc..... The glass needs a bit more work, but the caustics turned out nice

i think this is a grate attempt only one thing i feel is letting it down slightly, is the light colour... its too yellow, nice render, p.s. the wine looks very real

Perect. I even think your tiles look better than the real ones. I think the only thing missing is the light spots on the rim and the internal reflections are a little dark (but I prefer them like that). Sorry, just looking for faults in perfection, it's an amazing work.

Well, consodering there wasn't exactly much to go on in creating an accurate model of the glass, a lot of the problems are mostly due to the difference in the real and moddeled glass. I agree abut the darker parts of the glass/wine, but I guess I overlooked a lot of that as I was concentrating on the casutics :)

Damn, I know how hard it is to work with caustics, and I say you did a damn fine job!

Wow! I would take that render glass over the original anyday! It lacks the look of sulfer, the crap that clouds a good wine....ahh...I do love my red wine. Phenominal work!

And I thought I was patient! It's really remarkable. The fluted glass base on the original is what you mean, I guess. Another challenge might be, which one is real...

If you hadn't posted the photo, and stated that yours was a render - I wouldn't have questioned it. It looks quite photorealistic to me. Excellent! PS-thanks for the info on Im3dorg - and sorry for the late reply. Wedding tomorrow, and I just put 6 adults to bed at midnight. This was the first chance I've had to get back online. The tute images are remarkable! I'll learn it eventually - TU.

I know you were concentrating on caustics, which I think look gret, but to really bring it alive, re-render using a HDRI map in the enviroment. Then I think it'll be indistinguishable from the photo.. Well done

PLAGUE".im curious how did u do the wine in the glass and how did u get the colour of the wine to be less red on the outside edge of the liquid (where it meets the glass) ?" Well, the wine is transparent (like the glass), then filled with red fog, so the colour appears more dense in areas with more 'depth', and lightess to the thinner areas at the sides
