“Are there no depths to which you’ll not sink to embarrass our house… and me?” Hacathra accused as she confronted Keya in the hallway outside Mykal’s room, not seeming to care that he and Myst were there as well. “Isn’t that what you expect of me, since I’m nothing but a half-breed… the result of your shame,” Keya shot back venomously, adding with clear sarcasm; “Isn’t consorting with other mongrels all I’m worthy of? After all, what self-respecting elf would debase himself to be with the likes of me? That would almost be as bad as falling pregnant from a mere human!” Even Myst, who didn’t really know her at all, could feel Hacathra recoil at her daughter’s hurtful words. Words that Keya immediately regretted saying, born of the long festering pain she felt from being rejected by not only her house… but her own mother! Visible stunned, the boarding house madam stood silently for a moment, trying to recover her composure before she spat back something equally wounding, which would likely cost her what little relationship she had with her daughter. She knew full well Keya’s bitterness was mostly of her making; she’d treated her as an object of shame from the day she was born, but the reason wasn’t what her daughter thought. So, she countered in a carefully measured tone; “You’ve repeated asked me about your father… and why, if I hated the prospect of baring a half-elven child so much, would I mate with a human. I didn’t… not by choice anyway. I was raped by one of my guests. A foul bastard who caught me alone while I was tending to his room. When I reported the crime, he claimed that I took payment to pleasure him. With no witness to support my allegation, the elders had little choice but to let him go… but banish him for life. It isn’t your mixed blood that shamed me, or our house, it’s the enduring belief that the despicable thug paid me for sex… and you’re the result.” Keya nearly toppled from her feet at the revelation, which left Mykal no less stunned. All her life she had seen her mother as a hypocrite that mated with a human, then rejected the product of that union; her. But now she understood that she was the living reminder of an unwilling congress, made worse by her being falsely labeled a prostitute as well. “Why didn’t you just tell me!” Keya lamented, embracing her mother for the first time in decades. “I’ve spent my whole life hating you because I thought you were ashamed that I wasn’t a true elf and, therefore, unworthy to bare the Moonglamaer name.” “I didn’t want you to know that I’d been sullied like that… or that you’re the product of that assault,” Hacathra wept into her daughter’s shoulder. “By the time you were old enough to understand, the gossip had quelled, and I didn’t want to relive it all over again. I didn’t realize that I had been heaping my shame onto you until the wall between us had become so great that I didn’t know how the breach it.” “What about the bastard… who is he and what became of him?” Keya inquired with a cold, bitter edge to her voice that Mykal recognized. The last time he’d heard it, he’d seen a darker, more vicious side to the usually blithe bard than he’d ever suspected was lurking below her characteristically capricious nature; which left him dismayed… and a little frightened.
