Description

The WW I Gotha G.V heavy bomber was employed by the Imperial German Air Forces to supplement their successful fleet of zeppelin bombers. While the high flying lighter than air ships had superior altitude to protect them, the Gotha could carry heavy ordinance, were very effective at defending one another with their two gun stations, and could operate effectively in night time or day. Each aircraft carried a crew of 3, a pilot, and two gunners, one fore and the other aft. The Gotha also had a gun tunnel in the aft gunner's position that enabled the rear gunner to shoot at targets below as well as above and laterally. Anti-aircraft fire was the lumbering craft's biggest enemy, but it was durable, with its steel frame construction, and could take considerable punishment. Both the Gotha and zeppelin formed the backbone of Germany's bomber force, the Gotha was less expensive to operate than the lighter than air craft and soon replaced the zeppelin as the bomber of choice. About 205 G.V models were produced and served from 1916 to the end of the war in 1918. I really like the lumbering clumsy look of these planes, and I imagine that the gunners had mixed feelings about being as expose to enemy fire as they were! Gotha G.V: found somewhere on the 'net in the murky past, so I don't have any info on the model, but thanks to the original craftsman. Crew: ApolloMax and various gear and some very unlikely makeshift props. Both other aircraft Fokkers and Nieuports are from Neiwil's excellent WW I aircraft package available free at sharecg.

Both the Gotha and the British Vickers Vimmy set the stage for heavy bombers and both were huge aircraft with small bomb loads....this is some great aerial action. Thanks for the mention mate, always appreciated..
