The computer is dead. Long live the computer!
Here we see my devoted Mac. Aww, it looks like it's just sleeping! There's certainly no shame for it; it was a hard worker for many years.
I was working away as normal when the mouse pointer stopped moving... And it never booted again.
I tried every trick I could, but it was no use. Now, maybe you have experienced this with a car: I figured that since the cost to have a pro get it going again would exceed its value, it was time to retire it.
This comes a month after I was fretting about the longevity of the hard drive, and replaced it. Little did I realize that the REST of the computer would conk out so shortly afterwards. On the plus side, all my data is intact! (For all the good it does me!)
I was starting to sock money away for a new computer, but that all evaporated very quickly as soon as my garage door wouldn't open anymore! So, a new "anything" will have to wait.
In the meantime, I do have access to a Windows laptop, but that too is several years old and was fairly low-end to begin with. In other words, I won't be doing any rendering for a while... Possibly a LONG while. We'll see.
I can still do what I should have been doing more of anyway: leaving comments on other people's pictures! And, maybe I'll post some very CPU-undemanding pictures like photos. Maybe.
Oh, and for the two or three of you who will "miss" some special characters I use... Err, they might look a little different in the future... Hope you understand.
So, I guess that's it for now. But, as Frosty said, "I'll be back again someday!" :-)

Very sorry to hear of the demise of your Mac. When are the services? You don't think that WBC is going to picket the service, do you? Best of luck with the new machine (you'll probably get it sooner than you think) Until then hang in there!

Picketing the funeral? Hmm, you never know. Some people say that Mac computers are automatically "liberals."

I had a G5 just like this, I had some problems with it booting so I opened it up and gave it a thorough dusting and that seemed to get it going again. If it isn't getting any power it may just be the power supply. I have to admit though my G5 did take a fair bit of maintenance to keep it on the road. I had my share of blue screen and grey screen boots. GL hope you get a new machine soon

Sorry to hear about the computer... one thing though it lasted a long time!... mine usually only last five years... the good thing is I know you'll get a new one soon, because now days computers are relatively cheap... you can get a fairly good one for about half of what they use to cost.

So sorry my friend. Yes, it hurts when a loyal piece of technology finally gives in. You know that they just don't make them like that anymore. Sorry too that this puts the breaks on your renderings for a while. I hope you manage to get a new system in the near future.

Wow, you got a very long life from that machine if it's a G5! They tended to pour out so much heat they kinda popped their corks a bit too easily. I'm impressed at how well you obviously took care of your machine. When you're able to look into replacements I would take a good look at their iMacs, I've been very impressed by the capabilities, and haven't bought one of their "pro" lines in many years, and I work in graphics and printing, no less. Good luck with finding a successor to your old friend!

You need to write yourself a GOOD story, especially an interracial story - mystery, drama, comedy, in either case - the "INTERRACIAL" market is smoking HOT! Immediate seller combo - white male, black female... you write an excellent story, not some tripe... but something solid and moving... it WILL sell - easially enough to purchase you a new MAC. If you have such a story in mind, let me know... I have a really nice following that is HUNGRY for GOLD or Platinum stories. But I won't sponsor anything that is not... I have a name and a reputation that I won't tamper with. But for a good story? Yeah... I'll say a listen up folks for you... think about it... IF you have the time and inclination to do it. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Hey, that tin can was already written off for years! OK, raw deals aside, you just mentioned my own utter horror vision, because my render PC is still well-spaced, partially upgraded and still state-of-the-art, but OLD. And meanwhile it already has some mysterious flaws. So the best that I could do was an OS upgrade from Vista to Win8 because debugging/restarting/cosmetic surgeries under Win8 work ten times faster than with Vista... Regarding your Apple infrastructure - well: Best wishes for a good time blessed with worldly goods!

My condolences to your lost. My G5 is that age too, but it's still going strong. Just hang in there and good luck.

I sold my PowerMac a while ago and using a 2006 Intel MacPro which you can find on ebay at reasonable prices. I couldn't be bothered with Windows anymore, and I'm a retired Software developer what use to have 2-3 machines of both types around the house.. Did you hear that store are providing people who have purchased a new Windows machine, that comes with Windows 8, a backward install to Windows 7 for only 150 dollars.. not a good sign for Windows 8.. but then us Mac people always knew that : )

My condolances, MrGorf. And I understand fully well. My first PC was purchased 1992 and lasted to 2003. My present one is from 2003 and still running. And I hope it will continue to do so. Running on WinXP, at that. I don't want any later operative systems. Vista on my laptop is a bit of a hassle. My CRT monitor from 1992 lasted 18 1/2 years. I now have a wider flat screen one- looks nice and allows a larger image. But, as some of your fans said above, computers today are more powerful and cheaper than 10 years ago. Good luck with getting a new machine. You know I'll be waiting to gobble up (er, wrong word, maybe?) your newest creations! All my best to Didi and the gang! :-)
